Mapping Plate Boundaries with Reference to Mean Gravity Anomalies,

Abstract

A global chart showing plate boundaries as defined by the 1 degree x 1 degree mean free air gravity anomaly holdings of the Dept. of Defense Gravity Library is presented. The chart confirms and, in some cases, redefines the plate boundaries as now delineated from seismic and magnetic evidence. The gravity anomaly values have patterns suggesting that there are fossil or inactive subduction zones bounding the south side of the Caribbean plate, and that there are major discontinuities in the Western Pacific subduction system. In this paper, a fairly detailed surface gravity anomaly field is used for the first time on a global scale as evidence for the theory of global tectonics.
