Olfactory Acuity in Selected Animals Conducted during the Period June 1972 - September 1974
Abstract
The report summarizes the results of extensive experimentation designed to assess the olfactory acuity of various animal species for commonly encountered explosive odors in tactical situations such as C-4, Composition B, TNT, tetryl, PETN, and RDX. The experimental population included various breeds of canines as well as more exotic animals such as the domestic pig, javelina, coyote, civet cat, fox, raccoon, skunk, coatimundi, deer and ferret. In approaching this task, which had as its aim identification of potentially effective biosensors, both laboratory and field assessments were utilized. The latter approach (field assessment) was considered to be particularly important in that it represented conditions under which the biosensor would ultimately be used.
