Radioisotope Power Generator (RPG) Sentinel 25F Shock and Vibration Studies.
Abstract
An investigation was conducted to determine the ruggedness and performance of a commercially designed Radioisotope Power Generator, Sentinel 25, under varying conditions of shock and vibration. A test program was designed incorporating the basic design conditions of MIL-STD-810B for shock and vibration. The program was conducted on an operating RPG. Although the RPG failed to meet the basic design requirements of MIL-STD-810B, the results of the shock and vibration program do indicate that the RPG is sufficiently rugged for normal truck, air, or ship transportation. However, during any type of handling which would expose the RPG to a shock of 30g with a velocity change of 5.3 feet per second or a drop of 9 inches or greater on earth and hard surfaces, performance would most likely be degraded.
