Combustor Performance Parameters for Hydrocarbon Fuels.
Abstract
A survey of fuel producers and jet engine developers was made to determine the hydrogen carbon atom ratios and heats of formation of JP type fuels currently being used to estimate engine performance. On the basis of these results, standardized values were selected for JP-5, THMCPD (RJ-4), and Shelldyne H (RJ-5) for use in thermochemical computations. Calculations were made for the combustion of these fuels in a defined 'clean' air and in air preheated by the combustion of either hydrogen or propane with makeup oxygen (vitiation heating). Following combustion, each of the product mixtures was expanded isentropically, and conditions at the sonic point were defined. On the basis of these results, simple correlating equations describing the important gas dynamic relationships were derived. With these expressions, it is possible to deduce combustor performance from a variety of experimental measurements without resorting to the complex thermochemical calculational procedures.
