Lubrication-Space Experience and Design Criteria.

Abstract

Before a solid film lubricant warrants consideration for use on bearings and gears of space mechanisms, information relating to wear life and past applications is needed. This report presents a summary of information collected on the use of two solid film lubricants and a sputtered film of MoS2 on a number of space mechanisms. One film (inorganic) is composed of MoS2, graphite, gold, and sodium silicate and is referred to as MLF-5. The other film (Organic) is MoS2, Sb2O3, and PI-4701 polyimide resin and is referred to as MLR-2. The application and use of the lubrication methods are outlines, wear life data are given, and a number of items where the films were used are discussed.
