The Application of Love Waves to the Study of the Ocean Bottom. Part I. Detection of Buried Objects. Part II. The Method for the in situ Determination of the Shear Modulus of the Bottom of the Sea.

Abstract

A suitably stratified ocean bottom will propagate a Love wave. If an object lies on the bottom, or even is buried in it, Love waves incident upon it will be scattered. Some of these are coupled to the water. A hydrophone towed in the sea can thus localize the position of the object. A need exists for a method of making an accurate determination of the shear modulus of the sea bottom. A procedure is demonstrated with a two layer laboratory model.
