On Convected Rates.

Abstract

The convected time rate of a general second-order tensor is recognized as a useful concept in continuum mechanics. It is shown that a recursion formula for convected rates may be treated as a first-order differential equation and solved yielding a convection-diffusion theorem. Frame-indifference is discussed. Applications to Rivlin-Ericksen tensors, generalized convection and diffusion, stretching and spin, and convected stress rates are given. (Author)
