QUIPS: (Quiescent Uniform Ionized Plasma Studies). Modeling of the Auroral Electrojet.

Abstract

A cylindrical device is constructed for modeling the electrojet instability. The plasma, which is collisional for ions and collisionless for electrons, is produced by two concentric rf exciter discharges in an axial magnetic field. Each exciter consists of two electrically floating concentric strips in a grounded cage. The plasma is confined axially at one end by the cage, at the other end by a segmented anode consisting of 18 concentric rings, and radially by grounded walls at large distances (d 7 or = lm). The anode rings are connected in series by resistors facilitating the imposition of a radial electric field which causes an azimuthal, closed, Hall current. The plasma density is uniform axially and azimuthally, and is controllable radially.
