A REEXAMINATION OF THE MERCURY PHOTOSENSITIZED OXIDATION OF TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE.

Abstract

The mercury-photosensitized oxidation of C2F4 was studied at 29 and 127 C. The absorbed intensity was varied by a factor of 1000, and the O2 and C2F4 pressures by a factor of 30. The products of the reaction were cyclo-C3F6, CF2O, and C2F4O (tetrafluoroethylene oxide). Important intermediates in the oxidation are an electronically excited C2F4 molecule and the CF2O2 radical. In addition, both singlet and triplet CF2 radicals are involved. A detailed reaction mechanism is presented and several rate constant ratios are obtained. Where comparisons with literature values could be made, agreement is good.
