MODELING AND MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES FOR LARGE SPHERICAL ARRAYS.

Abstract

This is the first technical report on modeling and measurement techniques for large spherical arrays. The objective of the program is to develop a reliable economical method for the verification of the design concepts and analytical predictions of the radiation performance of large spherical arrays prior to full-sized antenna fabrication. Attainment of the objectives will be accomplished through a program of analyses and experimentation to accomplish the following: (1) Establishment, through test and evaluation, of the array element simulator; (2) Detailed design of a spherical model having an aperture of 100 gamma; (3) Establisment of a simple feed system for the spherical model array; and (4) Verification of the modeling techniques through experimentation with the spherical model containing a small number of element simulators. Progress on the design and development of each of the necessary components of the model spherical array is discussed. These components are: (1) the spherical array shell which supports the array elements in space, (2) the element of the array, and (3) the exciter radiator which is the primary component of the array feed system.
