INFRARED DIFFUSE REFLECTOR COATING.

Abstract

Needs exist for diffuse and highly reflective coatings in the infrared, and, to date, there are none. The object of this contract is to determine the feasibility of making such coatings (specifically, 700 F coatings which reflect to at least 5 microns). A two-dimensional Monte Carlo (statistical random walk) computer program has been prepared to compute the reflectance from a two-phase (particles suspended in a vehicle) medium using the principles of multiple light scattering. Incorporated in the program in detail are interface reflection, particle scattering, substrate reflection/absorption and absorption by the particle or vehicle. The inputs to the computer program are described in detail, and an actual simulation is followed. The initial results pointed out the necessity of expanding the program to three-dimensions. (Author)
