RETU RECOVERY EVALUATION TEST,
Abstract
Five test firings were made to establish the reliability of the recovery system. The first test consisted of the operation of the pin pusher, drogue gun, and fairing deployment. In this test the pin pusher failed to shear the pin and the chute cover was not ejected. The drogue gun fired and broke the chute cover loose but it failed to properly deploy the stabilization chute. The fairing ejected but hung up momentarily on the pin pusher bolt head. The second test was of the pin pusher and drogue gun only, no fairing deployment was attempted. In this test the pin pusher removed the chute cover but the drogue gun did not properly remove the stabilization chute from its container. The third test was of the drogue gun only. In this test the piston was deflected and hit the overhead beam. The drogue gun itself ruptured at the upper mounting lugs. The fourth test was of the drogue gun only and in this test as in the third test, the gun chamber ruptured. Deployment of the stabilization chute was not considered as representative because of the gun failure. The fifth test was successful and chute deployment appeared normal. No further tests were made of the system. (Author)
