MULTIPLE TARGET COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER TECHNIQUES.
Abstract
This technical report discusses the first three months effort pertaining to the Multiple Target Coherent Optical Receiver Techniques contract. The problem is primarily concerned with the determination of the feasibility of optical heterodyne techniques through a real atmosphere at 10.6 micron wavelength. In addition, data gathering on range and range rate of moving targets is a secondary goal. The method in which range and range rate are to be obtained is by the use of frequency modulated laser beam techniques. The FM modulation will be a sawtooth waveform operating at 100,000 Hz on the optical carrier frequency of 3 X 10 to 13th power Hz. This report describes the study effort and tests which have resulted during the first quarter on the receiver optics design and copper-doped germanium detectors which are sensitive at 10.6 micron. Since the laser transmitter section is not funded under the contract, only a brief summary of the Autonetics funded effort is described within the report. (Author)
