STUDY AND INVESTIGATION LEADING TO THE DESIGN OF A VARIABLE TIME DELAY TRAVELING-WAVE TUBE.

Abstract

This is the final report on a program to investigate the design of variable time delay traveling-wave tubes with the objective of a 50 nsec variable delay over the frequency band 500 to 1500 MHz. The results of measurements on two delay lines, type MA 2018, constructed under this program are presented, together with the results of measurements on a related tube type MA 2021. The results demonstrate the broadband capabilities of the tube and the relatively small variation of insertion loss with delay, a bandwidth in excess of two octaves having been measured with a variation of insertion loss of less than 4 db at a delay setting of 50 nsec. The report also presents a discussion of the principles and design of 0-type electron beam variable delay lines. (Author)
