NEW METHODS LEADING TO HIGH EFFICIENCY IN TRAVELING-WAVE TUBES.

Abstract

This is the first of three reports to be issued detailing the work done on this program to develop new concepts for achieving high efficiency in traveling-wave tubes. This report outlines the philosophy under which the investigation will be pursued. Information is presented on a dual analyzer to be used in this study, capable of simultaneously measuring the power voltage density and the RF beam current modulation of the spent beam. In addition this report contains a thorough disclosure of the performance of an increasing phase velocity tapered traveling-wave tube built and tested during this period. Design considerations for this tube are given. This positive phase taper tube showed a beam efficiency greater than 40 percent and a lower limit depressed collector efficiency of 46 percent.
