RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF AN ELECTRO-OPTIC WIDEBAND SPECTRUM ANALYZER.

Abstract

The purpose of the program is to study ways and means for carrying out instantaneous microwave frequency analysis through electro-optic interaction in KDP. The modulation of He-Ne light in the 8 to 10 GHz region has been observed with an optical phase discriminator operating in the electro-optic detection (EOD) mode. Observations have also been made of the microwave modulation in a mechanically more simple arrangement by the use of polarization electro-optic (PEOD) detection. While both the EOD and the PEOD modes are less sensitive than the linear modes which involve the direct detection of the RF modulation on the light, the RF levels employed are strongly interfering rendering the linear detection impractical at 10 GHz. With the relatively low light power employed, the observations of the frequency null were made near the noise level and appeared to correspond to the expression for the sensitivity in the EOD mode.
