RANDOM VIBRATION STRUCTURAL FAILURE DATA.

Abstract

Random vibration failure data have been obtained for magnesium alloy AZ31B-H24. Approximately 350 small cantilever plates were fabricated and tested to failure in pure bending under random vibration base excitation. A test program developed for this purpose is described. The standard deviation of a 'critical bending stress' is used as a predictor in analyzing the data. Failure criteria for assessing structural damage of missile and spacecraft structures which can be synthesized as thin plates are derived. Extension of the investigation to include additional materials and more general loading is proposed. (Author)
