PHASE TRANSFORMATIONS AND THERMODYNAMIC AND STRUCTURAL STUDIES.

Abstract

This research program has been concerned with thermodynamic and structural properties of metal halides, both in the vapor and solid states, and of certain phase transformations observed in the solid states of these substances. Crystal phase transformations have been discovered in these laboratories in FeBr2, CoBr2 and FeI2 (around 400 C). The transitions have been studied by heat capacity and X-ray methods. The crystal structures of the chromium dihalides, which are different than that found for most of the 3d transition metal dihalides, have been determined by single crystal X-ray methods. The thermodynamic and structural properties of the interesting complex NaFeCl4 have been determined. Properties of certain carbide phases have been studied.
