SMALL, THIN-WALLED COLUMBIUM ALLOY TUBING PROGRAM.

Abstract

An improved manufacturing process was developed for the production of small diameter, thin wall tubing of the columbium alloy D-43 (Cb-10W-1Zr-0.1C). Two goal sizes of tubing --0.250 in. I.D. x 0.030 in. wall and 0.125 in. I.D. x 0.015 in. wall -- were made in lengths of up to 15 feet. The finished tubing from the best process routes and schedules showed inspection acceptance rates of over 95% when inspected ultrasonically, dimensionally, and visually by commercial standards for high quality tubing. The process yields during tubing processing were comparable with those obtained with commercial tubing materials. The high temperature mechanical properties of the finished tubing were comparable to D-43 sheet material.
