LOW WEIGHT FOCUSING SCHEMES FOR TWT.

Abstract

This program is for the development of a permanent magnet focused lightweight (5 lb) traveling wave tube with a 5 db maximum noise figure, 20 db minimum small signal gain, -10 dbm minimum saturated power output, and 8 to 12 GHz frequency. The work this period consisted mostly of reducing the weight of the package to less than 5 lb. Maximum weight of the final package will be approximately 4.5 lb. The final package will contain Alnico VIII input and output magnets. Three tubes were built with pin seal input matches, to eliminate cavity loss and leakage, and thereby to lower the noise figure at the high end of the band. Test data were not sufficient to confirm any reduction in noise figure, due to other problems encountered with the tubes. Work is continuing with the pin seal input match. The results at the end of this quarter can be summarized as: noise figure 6.6 db, weight 4.5 lb, power +2.0 dbm, gain 28 db.
