FINITE WIDTH EFFECTS ON THE SELF ACTING FOIL BEARING.

Abstract

Side leakage effects on the foil bearing are investigated in this report. First the applicable differential equations are formulated and then two models are studied. Solution for the edge profile of the axisymmetrical foil bearing with a source at 'infinity' is obtained. In addition, the case of the axisymmetrical foil bearing on the verge of contact is analytically solved. That region of the self acting foil bearing in which the longitudinal pressure flow term of the Reynold's equation is negligible, is studied by means of a quasi axisymmetry approximation. This approximation is valid for sufficiently wide tapes and for small values of the parameter 6 microns U/T. Numerical solutions showing the effects of the controlling physical parameters are presented. Detail and numerical results and the computer programs for earlier work on the infinitely wide tape of finite stiffness are given. (Author)
