STRUCTURAL TESTS OF THE XQ-5 REINFORCED PLASTIC RADOME AND RECOVERY SPIKE PART NO. 1011042.

Abstract

Ambient and elevated temperature bending tests and ambient temperature compression tests were conducted in the laboratory on two radome assemblies to determine their elevated temperature strength properties when subjected to simulated flight and recovery loads. The results of the elevated temperature bending tests were very satisfactory. Strain gage instrumentation was installed in both radome assemblies and ambient temperature bending and compression calibration tests were conducted prior to a series of field drop tests which was conducted on the two radome assemblies to determine their suitability under actual ground impact and recovery loads. The field drop tests conducted at an impact velocity of 60 ft/sec resulted in three successful recoveries and five failures. The three successful recoveries resulted from drop inclination angles of zero, three and seven degrees with the engine orientated in the down position.
