SEA AND SWELL OBSERVATIONS,

Abstract

This report was prepared as an aid for quartermasters and others responsible for observing and reporting sea and swell from U. S. Navy ships. The publication stresses the importance of accurate wave observations and describes the differences between wind waves (sea) and swell. Methods for accurately observing wave direction, period, and height are presented, in addition to suggestions for eliminating poor wave observing practices.
