NOSE CONE, COPPER, FOR X-17 - PHOTOMICROGRAPHS,

Abstract

The purpose of the investigation is to take photomicrographs of polished and etched nose cone samples from three X-17 vehicles. Copper is used as the nose cone of the 3rd stage X-17 missile. It is necessary that the nose cone be pure copper, void of blow-holes and nonmetallic inclusions, to minimize erratic thermo effects during flight. Photos of 'as received' vacuum cast copper are to be submitted in reports to the Air Force to document the type of copper used.
