ELECTRON-IONIZATION CROSS SECTIONS.

Abstract

Work continued on the preliminary tests and calibration experiments required to implement the multiple-crossed-beam method of measuring cross sections. A series of Knudsen cell tests were completed; it was observed that carefully designed charged particle traps are necessary to produce an atomic beam free of electrons and ions. A new modulating ionizer was designed and constructed. Measurements were made concerning the properties of the 25 micron wire used in the flashable grids. Additional tests were made on the main ionizer and cross sections for background gas were measured. (Author)
