ORBITAL FUEL CELL.

Abstract

An analysis was made of cell and module configuration to determine the system effects of changing the active area of the individual fuel cells. After consideration of all the advantages and disadvantages of increasing module size, current plans are to maintain an active cell area of 0.0765 square foot. The configuration of the Fuel Cell System has been established, except for details of the Reactant Supply Subsystem configuration. A significant module change will be made to improve reliability in the event of a purge valve failure in an open condition. The fuel cell plates to be used on this contract will be improved versions of those developed under previous contracts. Areas of improvements presently being investigated are the elimination of welded parts and the reduction of tolerance build-up in critical areas. The basic development test program for cell development and performance includes open-circuit operation evaluation, improved electrodes evaluation, and cell tolerance studies.
