OPTIMUM COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER TECHNIQUES.
Abstract
The first phase of this program, which includes modification and repackaging of the tracking system electronics and optics as well as certain improvements in the design of the image dissector, has been successfully completed. The improvements in the tracking system electronics, including the addition of a pulsed AGC amplifier and internal time base generators, will provide more stable operation and will make possible the detailed experiments to be conducted throughout the remainder of this program. The electronic system has been repackaged to permit operation outside the laboratory; and the optical components, including both the vidicon camera and the image dissector, have been mounted on a base suitable for use in the subsequent outdoor experiments. The frequency response of the image dissector has been evaluated in the range from baseband to 1 GHz. Previous experiments were restricted to the frequency range above 1 GHz. Based upon this frequency response evaluation, a series of experiments employing coherent detection has been designed with a 15 MHz difference frequency between the local oscillator laser beam and the signal laser beam.
