DEVELOPMENT OF A MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF .005 INCH DIAMETER BERYLLIUM WIRE.

Abstract

A beryllium fine wire manufacturing technology was developed and employed in the production of .005 in. diameter wire. Process studies demonstrated that properly prepared 3/8 in diameter drawing stock could be converted into fine wire without intermediate annealing, and continuous .005 in. wire lengths of up to 64,000 feet were produced. The feasibility of producing .002 in diameter wire on production-type equipment was demonstrated concurrently. Pilot production and manufacturing process refinement resulted in a total production of 745,000 feet (11.8 pounds) of .005 in diameter and 10,000 feet of .002 in diameter wire, which quantities were transmitted to the Air Force. Technical details are presented and manufacturing process and product specifications are appended. (Author)
