HELPER PHAGE - DEPENDENT TRANSFECTION IN BACILLUS SUBTILIS,

Abstract

Bacteriophage SP-18 renders competent cells of Bacillus subtilis 168 (ind-) susceptible to transfection by DNA from apparently unrelated phages. SP-18 DNA was active in transfection, but SP-10 DNA or LP-19 DNA was inactive when tested alone. However, if SP-10 DNA or LP-19 DNA was added to competent cells along with intact SP-18 phage, infective centers of the corresponding phage, SP-10 or LP-19, were produced. DNA from SP-18 was also active as helper, but it was less effective than the intact phage. (Author)
