OPTIMUM COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

The tracking system circuit modifications and repackaging effort was completed during the first quarter of this program. These modifications have been checked out in the laboratory during this quarter, using both direct detection and coherent detection. The system, including image dissector, vidicon camera and tracking system electronics, operated satisfactorily and the experiment has been moved to the outdoor test range. A preliminary system evaluation has been made using transmission over a 300-foot one-way path. Although the mechanics of actually performing the experiment are considerably more difficult outside the laboratory, the system is presently operating satisfactorily and is able to track a laser beam which rotates at several revolutions/second in the field of view. Some improvements were made in the output circuit of the image dissector and a photomultiplier with the modified output was constructed and evaluated. This crossed-field photomultiplier will be delivered to Rome Air Development Center for further evaluation. (Author)
