ENGINEERING TEST OF BOOT, COMBAT, TROPICAL, DMS WITH SPIKE RESISTANT SOLE SHIELD.

Abstract

An Engineering test of Boot, Combat, Tropical, DMS with Spike Resistant Sole Shield was conducted by USAGETA 3 March - 6 July 1966 to determine technical performance and safety characteristics of the boot when subjected to accelerated usage. It was concluded that (1) the outsole system of test boots provides less average puncture resistance than the standard DMS construction outsole system used in combination with the experimental saran and steel plate slip-in insole when the force is applied at low speeds and greater average puncture resistance when the force is applied in the middle and high ranges of speeds; (2) the steel plate sole shield in test boots is highly susceptible to cracking, is not satisfactory with respect to durability, is satisfactorily resistant to deformation, has no appreciable effect on other boot components, and does not affect the fit, comfort, or stability of the wearer; and (3) cracking of the steel plates in the Service Test is similar to but less frequent and less severe than that in the Engineering Test. It was recommended that the steel plate sole shield be made from a more crack-resistant material and that the steel shank used in the standard combat boot construction be modified to prevent the coincidence of the end of the shank and the flex point of the outsole.
