DEVELOPMENT OF AN ADIABATIC CALORIMETER,

Abstract

An adiabatic calorimeter has been developed for the study of the exothermic chemical reactions. The apparatus has been used successfully to determine heats of polymerization, perform curing-rate studies, and establish thermal decomposition rates as a function of temperature for high-energy propellants. The adiabatic calorimeter was designed for remote operation in a test cell with the control system located in an adjacent lab. The control system was designed to terminate a test automatically after the test sample temperature has reached a preselected value. The construction and operating procedure for the calorimeter are described in detail. Illustrative examples and data reduction techniques are discussed. (Author)
