EXPERIMENTAL MODIFIED SINOWRITER (CHICODER).

Abstract

The experimental Chicoder was improved to encode 32,000 possible symbols. As a Chinese input device, the Chicoder is presently capable of encoding any of 10,500 Chinese characters at a rate faster than dictionary look-up methods and make entries with a standard English typewriter. Character groupings by radicals, positioning of the radicals, stroke patterns and stroke pattern positions were classified and improved. The proof printer portion of the subsystem was proved feasible by printing the characters that were encoded and recorded on the punched paper tape. The device produced is capable of making entries and encoding Chinese characters for (1) input to computers, (2) communications, and (3) any other area where machine processing of the Chinese language or large quantities of similar characters is required. It is also feasible to employ the Chicoder as a computer output device to printout machine processed Chinese text. (Author)
