NITROSO RUBBER EXPULSION BLADDERS FOR NITROGEN TETROXIDE APPLICATION.

Abstract

Techniques for fabricating carboxy nitroso rubber expulsion bladders with and without permeation barriers for nitrogen tetroxide application are being investigated. Mechanical property evaluation, fabrication studies and simulated service tests with prototype bladders have been conducted. Several six inch diameter spherical bladders have been fabricated. These include all rubber and fiberglass reinforced rubber bladders and composite bladders composed of ultrasonically welded aluminum foil/rubber, overlapped aluminum foil/rubber and electroformed nickel/rubber. Nitrogen tetroxide and visual water expulsion tests have been performed with the bladders. The latter tests were conducted in a transparent plastic tank to observe the collapse pattern. Engineering design of the tooling for the 12-1/2 inch spherical bladders has been completed and the fabrication is in progress. (Author)
