EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SUCTION CUP ANCHORS.

Abstract

An experimental investigation of a suction cup, undersea anchor is reported. Data on leakage rates, normal forces, and possible horizontal pulling forces are presented. Different suction cup materials and shapes, and two different contact surfaces were tested. The suction cup is shown to be a promising attachment device, developing friction coefficients as high as 0.59. (Author)
