INSTRUMENTATION FOR ELECTRIC FIELD MEASUREMENT. PHASE I. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS.

Abstract

The report establishes electric-field sensor system definitions and sensor performance criteria. The effects of electric fields investigated during the literature search are presented and evaluated by application of the criteria. The report describes and makes recommendations from a laboratory study of the Pockels effect in KDP. Calculations and measurements are made of the response of a 24-foot long, 1/4-inch diameter fiber-optic light pipe driven by a point light source located close to the input end of the fiber bundle. Source collimation was found to reduce the observed 1.6 x 10 to the minus 8th power second light pipe rise time to a value less than 5 x 10 to the minus 9th power second. (Author)
