THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUPERIOR TITANIUM-BASE ALLOY FOR CRYOGENIC APPLICATIONS. VOLUME 2.

Abstract

The primary objectives of this alloy development program were achieved with a Ti-5Al-2.5Sn-2.5V-1.3Cb-1.3Ta alloy which possesses adequate toughness, strength and ductility for structural applications from ambient to liquid hydrogen temperatures and exhibits good formability and weldability. As examples, this alloy composition exhibits tensile yield strengths of 119 to 129 ksi at 75 F and notched/unnotched tensile strength ratios of 0.90 to 0.96 at -423 F. Also, this alloy shows good reproducibility of properties as a result of performing replicate tests on four different heats of the same nominal composition.
