FIELD TESTING OF PROPELLANTS.

Abstract

During the third quarter of this program, screening studies were completed on methods for field testing of the propellants N2H4/UDMH, N2O4/NO and gelled N2H4/Al. Items covered to complete Phase I were: (1) the determination of NO in N2O4 at the 0.6 percent level by means of partial pressure measurements, (2) the comparison of the gravimetric oxygen bomb method vs the partial pressure method for N2O4/NO (90/10) propellant, and (3) the determination of N2H4 in N2H4/Al gel by controlled current coulometry. As a result of the screening studies carried out in Phase I, the following methods were selected for development into model field test kits: (1) the partial pressure technique to determine NO in N2O4/NO propellant, (2) the coulometric method for the characterization of N2H4/UDMH propellant and determination of N2H4 in N2H4/Al gelled propellant, and (3) the calcium hydride-water reaction pressure measurement for the determination of water in N2H4/UDMH and N2H4/Al gelled propellant.
