SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. PHASE III PROPOSAL. BOEING MODEL 2707. VOLUME IV-13. FLIGHT SIMULATION PROGRAM,

Abstract

The Flight Simulation Program discussed herein is an element in the total test documentation. Flight simulations are characteristically different from other simulations in that the work is primarily addressed to the development of systems, including the man machine relationship, that control the flight path of the airplane and to performance evaluation of the dynamic behavior of the airplane in flight in its simulated environment. Another identifying feature is that computers are used to simulate in real time the mathematical relationships between the disturbing forces and the control forces applied to the airplane and, in many cases, the control system hardware. Airplane performance and design studies which utilize analog and digital computers, (generally open loop and not necessarily real time) are not considered to be within the scope of flight simulation. The purpose of the flight simulation program is to aid in the development and integration of those subsystems that are required for safe and efficient flight-path control of the airplane; assist in the evaluation of the effects on the flight dynamics of the fluid environment through which the airplane will fly; determine the operational margins in both normal and abnormal operating conditions; and contribute to the training of the flight test crews. The results of the flight simulation program will be a factor in the development of an airplane, along with associated operating procedures, that are compatible with the airline operational environment.
