FEASIBILITY DEMONSTRATION OF HIGH-BRIGHTNESS LASER DISPLAY.

Abstract

Work is reported on the demonstration of feasibility of a high-brightness laser display for a Heads-Up Sight. Principal components of the system include a 5 mw helium-neon gas laser, X-Y galvanometer beam deflectors providing 3 kHz bandwidth and 250 resolution elements in each of the X and Y directions, a spherical lens-ground glass combination for fielding the display within a 3 x 5 in. window, and a hologram projection lens (to provide a no-parallax, image-at-infinity) consisting of a 4 x 5 in. photographic plate equivalent to a conventional compound lens system weighing approximately 100 times as much as the hologram lens. Simple patterns consisting of a vertical bar, a horizontal bar, a cross and a circle were generated with conventional solid-state electronic pattern generator. All patterns are independent as to positioning and rotation. (Author)
