THE CALCULATION OF PASSING STRESSES FOR DISLOCATIONS NEAR FREE SURFACES.

Abstract

The passing stress between two dislocations on parallel slip planes in the same glide system near a free surface has been calculated. The computations take into account the effect of the image force on the passing distance. The results of the computations are being applied to the operation of dislocation sources near free metal surfaces. An explanation for the high dislocation density in surface layers is forthcoming from the calculated stress fields in the immediate vicinity of a free surface. The observed asymmetry of slip bands in FCC metals has been explained. (Author)
