TEST AND EVALUATION OF THE NEAR SURFACE REFERENCE TEMPERATURE SYSTEM.

Abstract

Extensive laboratory and field tests were conducted with thirty Near Surface Reference Temperature (NSRT) Systems. Each system consisted of an intake-mounted thermistor probe and a meter readout on the ship's bridge. Meter accuracies were checked during laboratory tests by comparison with input values of known resistance; thermistor probe accuracies were determined by immersion in a temperature-controlled water bath. During field tests, sea surface temperatures were measured with the ship's intake thermometer, with an intake thermistor probe meter readout, and with a bucket thermometer. These data were compared point by point with the reference values determined by averaging bucket thermistor probe and overside thermistor probe measurements. A total of 340 six-hourly observations made at six ocean station vessels were investigated. Temperatures measured with the permanently installed NSRT system were superior to those measured with the ship's intake thermometer. The study concludes that an intake thermistor probe and meter readout system should be adopted as a standard instrument for measuring sea surface termperature. (Author)
