DEVELOPMENT OF L- AND C-BAND SOLID STATE SOURCES.

Abstract

Integrated resonators suitable for high-stability radiosonde oscillators were analyzed. A graph for determining the characteristic impedance and the effective dielectric constant of microstrip transmission lines (strip above ground plane) was developed. It was concluded that high-alumina ceramic substrates are best suited for radiosonde applications. Discrete-component radiosonde circuits were developed under a companion program. Typical results obtained to date were: P sub o = 330 mW; = 19%; Temperature stability = 800 KHz (-70 C to +75 C). A breadboard modulator that can be reproduced by chip-mounted monolithic circuits was tested. This modulator incorporates an astable multivibrator and eliminates the use of a pulse transformer. Development was begun on transistor drivers, high power varactors, and high-power multiplier circuits for a harmonic generator chain to give 100 watts cw at C-band. A transistor driver combining the power outputs of 64 TA2675s and producing 1 kilowatt cw at 300 MHz was developed on a related RCA-sponsored program carried out in one of our operations at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The feasibility of combining the power outputs of a large number of transistors thus having been established, the work on this contract was concentrated on achieving improved efficiency, smaller size, and higher operating frequency from transistors. This work was carried out with circuits using only a few transistors. Work was begun on fabrication of epitaxial multiple-junction GaAs varactors connected in series, and on TEM resonant-bar doubler circuits combining the power outputs of two diodes. (Author)
