DEPTH OF FROST PENETRATION IN NON-UNIFORM SOIL.

Abstract

This report presents the results of an investigation relative to the collection and improvement of techniques developed for the prediction of frost penetration depth and rate into non-uniform (multilayered) soil. The approximate techniques encompassing latent heat only, latent heat plus volmetric specific heat, and an adaptation of the modified Berggren equation are reviewed and compared. A sample problem is treated mathematically using each technique. Results indicate that an adaptation of the modified Berggren equation is the best technique for determining the depth of frost penetration in a non-uniform soil.
