QUASI-OPTICAL ELECTRON BEAM STUDIES AND TECHNIQUES FOR MILLIMETER AND SUBMILLIMETER WAVELENGTH GENERATION.

Abstract

This contract was in essence a feasibility study of a new interaction scheme for extracting beams. The proposed interaction should take place when an array of small electron beams are collected by a thin metallic film deposited on the surface of a dielectric. The interaction takes place between the conduction current and the RF electric field within the volume of the thin metallic film. An approximate theoretical analysis of the problem is presented and the power output which might be expected from such an interaction is calculated. A practical method of modulating the array of electron beams is presented. A preliminary experiment is reported which demonstrated that the thin film is not damaged by the electron beam. Design and fabrication problems of the electron gun and beam modulator are discussed. (Author)
