X-7A RAMJET TEST VEHICLE.
Abstract
Two X-7A flights were executed to evaluate engine performance and ignition sequencing and to document the reliability of the command guidance and sutopilot control systems. Additionally, two airdrops of a Hi-speed parachute test vehicle were conducted to evaluate the supersonic stability and loading characteristics of a new three-chute-cluster drag parachute. Supporting ground checkout of systems and environmental qualification of components were performed to advance further vehicle reliability. Simulation studies were conducted to determine the aerodynamic and thermodynamic effects of proposed structural modifications to the vehicle, to establish the design requirements for an improved performance vehicle operating at Mach 4 at 100,000 feet, and to resolve the problems involved in developing fuel system components compatible with high energy fuels. Modernization and modifications of existing vehicles is in progress. (Author)
