REPRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF SIGNALS. PART XXIII. ON THE REPRESENTATION OF LIGHTLY DAMPED TRANSIENTS.

Abstract

Historically, Fourier Techniques have been used extensively for the representation of all types of signals. More recently, Huggins, Young, Sopko, and others have been successful in representing signals on bases of lower dimensionality than Fourier methods would require by matching their basis elements to the signals considered. This paper presents a comparison of the results obtained when certain underwater acoustic signals of a lightly damped, oscillatory nature were represented, using both Fourier techniques and a basis more closely matched to the signals: orthonormalized decaying complex exponentials. It is further shown that improved practical techniques result from considering the signals as envelopes of a sinusoidal carrier. (Author)
