ENGINEERING TEST OF TRUCK, FORKLIFT, MULTIPURPOSE, 4000-POUND-CAPACITY, UL-42-3 (SANDPIPER).

Abstract

The engineering test of the 4000-pound-capacity forklift truck (Sandpiper) was conducted from 15 October 1965 to 20 October 1966 to determine vehicle compliance with technical performance requirements as stated in the SDR. Testing was conducted on specified test courses at Aberdeen Proving Ground to determine vehicle performance and durability. Vehicle performance was unsatisfactory due to an inherent instability causing a prominent safety hazard, insufficient differential cooling, deficient braking, and an inadequate on-board fuel supply. Vehicle durability was unsatisfactory due to excessive maintenance requirements. It was recommended that a major redesign be accomplished to correct the deficiencies and shortcomings which were found during the engineering test. (Author)
