FIELD EVALUATION OF THE HAZARD TO HEARING OF A PROPOSED 25 METER RANGE TO PERSONNEL WEARING EAR PROTECTIVE DEVICES,

Abstract

The hazard to hearing of soldiers protected by three different ear protective devices was evaluated while firing on a proposed redesigned, and sound deadened 25 meter range. There were no significant differences in temporary threshold shifts (TTS) of soldiers protected by three different ear protective devices when firing on the three different firing points (original range, redesigned range, and redesigned range with sound deadening material). Redesign and quieting efforts reduced the temporally integrated sound pressure level (SPL) by 8 db. Some individuals suffered potentially hazardous TTS while firing even when protected by ear protective devices, although the average losses were within reasonable limits. For that reason, utmost care should be exercised in the exposure of personnel to such noise, such care to include supervised use of appropriate ear protective devices and maximum efforts to quiet the range.
