HIGH-POWER MAGNETRON INJECTION GUN NOISE STUDY.
Abstract
The d-c space-charge flow is evaluated for the special case where theta is assumed to have a prescribed radial variation in the drift region. The space-charge-flow parameters in the drift region are obtained explicitly as functions of radius, while the required cathode current density is expressed in terms of the emission radius. The 4-degree MIG configuration has been simulated on the Poisson cell and preliminary space-charge-free trajectories have been obtained. The digital computer trajectory program yields cathode current densities which agree reasonably well with theory. However, the results still experience considerable fluctuations and convergent solutions have not yet been obtained. The digital computer noise analysis has considered different methods for sampling the total electron population and determining the noise characteristics of the space-charge flow. The results indicate that the power spectra may be influenced by the particular manner in which the problem is handled. The 12-degree and 4-degree MIG's were evaluated in the beam analyzer and the results compared with the 8-degree case. Maximum beam thickness and current are obtained with the 12-degree cathode, while the inner beam diameter is approximately the same for all three cases. The 4-degree cathode appears to produce an undulating, nonlaminar beam when operated at low magnetic field values. (Author)
